California Reparations & Reparative Justice
We are California's first and only grassroots, state-wide organization born to achieve Reparations and Reparative Justice for Black/African-American descendants of persons enslaved in the U.S. (American Freedmen) living in California.
California Reparations Task Force
CJEC is one of seven community 'anchor' organizations selected by the California Reparations Task Force to conduct community outreach and raise awareness for California Reparations.
In 2020, our advocates worked hard alongside Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber to improve and enact AB - 3121, the State law that created America's first-in-the-nation Task Force to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African-Americans.
Now, we're working to build strong public and community support in California for California Reparations, and make sure California creates and enacts strong Reparations legislation.

Recognizing Our Unique Black American Lineage: SB 189 - Section 14 (formerly AB-1604)
In 2021 and 2022, our all-volunteer team of Reparations advocates wrote language in legislation requiring California agencies to recognize the unique lineage of Black Californians who descend from U.S. Slavery.
We are excited and thankful that the legislation was signed into law recently, making California the first state to collect data on descendants of U.S Slavery specifically, recognizing Black American Freedmen as the unique group of people we are! Click here to read it!
Ending Modern-Day Involuntary Servitude (Slavery) in California Prisons - ACA 8
We continue to support grassroots efforts to finally end forced labor by removing involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime from our State Constitution.
