California Reparations: AB - 3121

CJEC is one of seven community 'anchor' organizations selected by the California Reparations Task Force to conduct community outreach and raise awareness for California Reparations. In 2020, our advocates worked hard alongside Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber to improve and enact AB - 3121, the State law that created America's first-in-the-nation Task Force to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African-Americans. Now, we're working to build strong public and community support in California for California Reparations, and make sure California creates and enacts strong Reparations legislation. Visit the official website of the California Reparations Task.

Recognizing Our Unique Black American Lineage: SB 189 - Section 14

In 2021 and 2022, our advocates wrote language in legislation requiring California agencies to recognize the unique lineage of Black Californians who descend from U.S. Slavery. We are excited and thankful that the legislation was signed into law recently, making California the first state to collect data on descendants of U.S Slavery specifically, recognizing Black American Freedmen as the unique group of people we are!
